Revitalize the old train depot. It has the potential to be gorgeous but is an eye sore now with graffiti and is embarrasing.

With the construction of Steel Ranch, this will bring more traffic to this section of 42. Currently there are terrible bike lanes and terrible sidewalks, if none at all. Recommend wide sidewalks and bike lanes here. Also, for the entire stretch of 42 under discussion. Recommend removing the “suicide lanes” and placing a tree lined median.

So Hwy 42 is no longer going to be a highway? The speeds are being reduced, sidewalks and bike lanes are added, etc.? What happens to drivers who use this route daily? Divert to Hwy 287? Not very convenient.

Note that an underpass at Paschal and Highway 42 is part of the Boulder County capital improvement plan:

It would be great to coordinate the Highway 42 Gateway project work in this area with the train underpass just west of there planned for 2013.

Actually, at the Highway 42 Gateway Project meeting last night I received some clarification on the plans for the Highway 42 and Paschal intersection. It is currently planned to have a stoplight, but they are open to other traffic mitigation devices such as a roundabout. Also, the underpass is going to be further south near the southern end of North End, where the trail goes east to Hecla Lake.

Need sidewalk and bike lane here. Recommend reducing speed limit to 35 mph, with enforcement.

Community park here would be nice. No retail, no housing. Could play off the train/train depot theme.

If RTD parking has to be built here, please make it an aesthetically appealing lot, with a water feature, rock feature, sculptures, artsy lights, etc. The parking lot at the baseball fields is an embarassment and is ugly.

Extremely dangerous section for bicycles and pedestrians. Guard rail prevents separation from traffic and vehicles using center turn lane prevent southbound vehicles from moving over. No easy solution but it is getting worse with the new development and more bicycles and walkers

I agree with Rob. I use the DASH bus regularly and I dread walking/biking along this tight corridor section.

Definitely see an opportunity here to present some sort of Northern entrance into the Old Town. Would like to see it in a similar theme as the Pine/42 entrance from the SE.

Connecting the communities north of South Bldr Rd. with downtown at this location would be a safer and more convenient alternative than Hwy 42 (as it stands now) for pedestrians and for those on bicycles, especially without bike lanes along S. Bldr between Hwy 42 and Garfield. I really look forward to seeing this idea become a reality.

I would definitely like to see a pedestrian crossing at the intersection of the paved path along the train tracks and South Boulder Rd. Putting in an underpass across that many lanes of traffic could be very difficult, but I would hope that the City of Louisville would be open to a bridge. I think that putting in this connection will help those north of South Boulder Rd. feel more a part of the city and will ultimately lead to some great connections between the Louisville, Lafayette, and ultimately Erie trail systems.

Also need to address pedestrian/bike safety taking us out to 42. Currently there is a sidewalk on only one side. It is very dangerous to navigate outside of a vehicle -

Assuming a large scale pedestrian crossing over/under/on 42 will be a ways out with funding. Is there a more temporary fix, or a first step, to help start the transition? A flashing ped light? Something to help people safely cross from the ball fields into down town?

I am so excited about this project! My wife and I purchased the duplex on the corner of Spruce St. and Hwy 42 almost three years ago. We have been working very hard and spending money to renovate the property and improve the location while keeping the historic character. The traffic condition on Hwy 42 between South Boulder Road and Lock Street is in desperate need of attention. Bicycles, pedestrians and cars all suffer with a speed limit that is too high and road conditions that are not adequate. Developing more bike paths, creating pedestrian rights of way, lowering the speed limit and improving the road conditions through this corridor is an EXCELLENT idea and will allow The City of Louisville to revitalize and grow it’s vibrant community. Great Idea!

How about putting a frontage road on the west side (or both sides) along Hwy 42 similar to what they are talking about in Boulder on Pearl Pkwy between 30th St and the railroad tracks by the new bus station? This way you keep some relatively higher speeds for people driving through the area but also give the street some parallel parking, bike lanes, and more of a neighborhood feel along the frontage road. The median that separates Hwy 42 from the frontage road could have trees and landscaping to make it more attractive.

A frontage road could potentially work in the more commercial area of Highway 42 south of South Boulder Rd., but wouldn’t have the right feel in the more residential area on the north side at Steel Ranch and North End.

As a new resident of Steel Ranch, I would like to have a safe, convenient way to access the bike path west of the train tracks. Using that path, we would have safe walking/biking access to Centennial Drive leading to South Boulder Rd and, ultimately, Main Street to downtown. This option would be safer and more desirable than travelling along Highway 42.
In addition to increasing accessibility to Main Street and downtown, this would also provide access to the RTD bus line (DASH) which runs along South Boulder Road. Currently, I don’t have a safe way to walk from my home in Steel Ranch to access public transportation.

With the construction of Steel Ranch housing development, what about installing a semi-actuated signal at Hwy 42 and Paschal Dr?
It should satisfy the warrant for one.

    Thanks
    Kevin

agree with earlier comment about speed limit (35?), bike lane, and sidewalk — we also need a pedestrian signal to cross Highway 42
